Research at the FNRL
The FNRL conducts research with numerous fish species including: salmon, trout, walleye, perch and bass. This research is, and has been, supported by the Ontario Ministries of Natural Resources and Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the University of Guelph, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, NSERC and industry.
A brief history
Thirty five years ago, in 1969, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR), then the Department of Lands and Forests, approached the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Guelph (UG). They offered funds for fish nutrition research to formulate Canadian dry fish diets which could replace imported feeds from the U.S. and Europe. At that time beef liver and spleen were used widely as diet for fishes, mostly salmonids, in Government fish culture stations. More...
